Why New Homeowners Should Get A Home AC Checkup

Buying a new home is an exciting time full of possibilities. It also ushers in a host of new responsibilities like keeping a watchful eye on critical systems that run your home. Your HVAC system is one of those systems, and there are few specific things within that system to look for. It’s also wise to find AC repair service  soon after closing on your new home.

When to call for AC repair?

It’s smart to call for AC service as soon as you move in to give the HVAC system a full inspection. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, as the old saying goes. And a knowledgeable AC repair technician is the perfect person to spot any tiny problems that could become really big problems one day.

Looking through maintenance records

If your new home was well cared for by previous owners, you might be lucky enough to have maintenance records that can show you exactly what’s been done to the system over the years and any previous problems that might have been addressed. If you’re not lucky enough to have records, then there is no time like the present to start them with regular maintenance visits by an AC repair technician.

Change the filter regularly

It’s critical to the life of your unit to change the filter regularly. The filter should be easy enough to spot, but if you’re unsure, just ask your AC tech to point it out for you and show you the proper way to remove the old and replace with new. Some maintenance contracts even take care of replacing the filter for you, too. So be sure to ask if that’s included in the package if you sign a maintenance contract.

Pay attention to the area around your unit

As a new homeowner, it’s a good idea to get to know your unit. Locate it on your property, and be sure to keep the immediate vicinity clear of any excess leaves or dirt. It’s a good rule of thumb to keep plants and shrubs at least a few feet away from the unit, but don’t remove them completely. Having a shaded AC unit is actually good for the machine.
